I feel Beats 1 is actually quite good at keeping it's audience engaged and active. They have many new ways of communicating with them that come with being part of Apple.
Firstly Beats 1 allows you to access them on media's such as twitter by their account @Beats1. As Twitter is quite an interactive you could get a very quick reply from them, but as Beats 1 is quite a new radio it does not have as many followers as expected. As an example the Youtuber Zoella, who you can find out more under my online, social and participatory media tab, has over 12 million followers and Beats 1 has only 565K. They still have a long way to go, but it's a start and gives listeners who do follow a quick way to react and get response wanted. As Beats 1 is an apple product and this gives many advantages as you can also make requests through they're apps such as iMessages to specific iCloud address. Beats 1 like many radios have a Mixtape segment where you can submit songs, but they're advantage on this you can make suggestions straight on the Music app which all apple users would have. What I find quite cool and would personally really enjoy using is the feature. It allows you to the buy the music you hear on the radio onto apple music, which means you can 'shift' music from 'radio' to your own playlist. So every time you hear something you like you just move it over and voila.
Reading the reviews from the uk.businessinsiders article on the launch of Beats1 I concluded that they have been quite successful with fulfilling the needs of the audience. Many of the people interviewed said they "loved hoe electric the tracks are" and love the enthusiasm from the DJ's. Not many had complained and even Tyler Haynes the Communications Manager who believes "hes not the target audience" of Beats1 still likes the idea of it and that is it there for others to use. I think that it definitely fulfills the entertained aspect, reading the reviews as many acknowledge the new fun tracks, and upbeats of the DJ's themselves. I think the Social Interaction aspect is hit well too, as the new uncommon artists played can be used as conversation starters. Most of the people interviewed said that there were minimal interruptions to the music so the audience wouldn't be very informed and educated about the world we live in, but in the scenario I don't think they really want to be as they simply want to listen to the music. If they wish to learn about the world they couldn't simply search u the news, or watch a talk show.
Then I read an article on computerworld.com about the same issue. Unlike the previous website which looked more into the people point of view this had a more detailed description of the more technical side of things. It outlined the good and the bad aspects of Beats 1 Radio and what was the reason Apple even bothered to make one, as radio's are old fashioned and surely people are gonna stick to what they know. It explains that because Beats 1 is just one radio that doesn't have more specialized radio channels it brings people together and is almost vintage. This way everybody all around the world is more or less listening to the same thing on Beats1. This allows for social interaction. Furthermore due to the wide range it music it allows everyone to identify with themselves and maybe even learn something new bout themselves as well. To target it's audience Beats 1 does things like using already established who would bring they're own fan base to the radio. For example they use DJ's popular in England such as Zane Lowe and Julie Adenuga. They also use people like Jaden Smith who is not a DJ but is a celebrity and a role model, he has his own show on Beats 1, which would bring his massive fan base to Beats 1.
The company think deeply in who they employ, they look into DJ's who have exclusive knowledge and reputations in the certain music genre. For example Julie Adenuga's brothers are both famous British artist in that genre. Beats 1 also provides certain exclusive content which in only available under their subscription. For example Taylor Swift's back catalog, which is not actually available on Spotify. “Beats 1 - will be about new music using famous DJs like Zane Lowe. They'll do a good job at this with a hefty content and marketing budget, but with limited distribution (online only) and a "new music" format it's unlikely to be a devastating challenge to existing UK radio stations. Beats 1 and Apple Music isn't about taking on radio - it's about providing an environment to encourage people to pay a tenner a month to subscribe to Apple Music. Spotify has much more to worry about than Capital FM.” - Matt Deegan - creative director of Folder Media
I agree with what Matt Deegan says, I believe that Beats 1 has a completely different format than most other radios, it being online, so it shouldn't affect other Radios. I mean obviously it will still count as general competition but so do all the other 600 local radios and 1000 online broadcaster, why is Beats 1 any special. Furthermore, Beats 1 has a very niche audience as they are very specified with the music they play, this way many people will not even be interested in listening to it, unless they want to widen they're music interests. The format of the radio is different too they do much less talking, so audience interested in a more talk show type of atmosphere would listen to a more local radio.
Apple decided to launch a now worldwide radio station- Beats Radio 1 on June 30th, 2015. It's a subscription based radio, this means somewhat like Spotify you need to pay monthly to use their services, but this Radio focuses mostly on Indie and Rap. Modern Radio
Many people would be surprised if Apple opened a radio station, but there is logic behind it, here are some reasons Apple may have invested in this business:

Came to work 30 minutes late, shhh don’t tell my boss. And definitely don’t take advice from me. But you know who you can take advice from Ed Sheeran. And here he comes with his song perfect. *Ed Sheeran- Perfect plays* Well we got time for one more song and let’s have my favorite 5 seconds of summer youngblood. *5 Seconds of Summer- Youngblood plays* Well that’s a rap u guys for the Billboard top hot 10 list. Have a great morning and see yah guys tomorrow at 6am per usual. Hasta la vista baby! And...... My Final PodcastPodcast Analysis All in all I’m actually quite happy with my final piece or work. I think although I sound quite weird I do somehow resemble Radio DJ’s as they speak rather quickly and try to keep an upbeat voice and enthusiasm. I picked my songs considering popularity rate at the moment and tried to still add a variety in style to fit the different audiences. For example rap- Cardi B and more of a rock-ish pop vibe from 5 Seconds of Summer. I still tried to not use anything drastically different that majority of audience wouldn’t like as this would affect my audience.
I tried keeping vocabulary quite basic so that it is understandable for all ages from 12 up, who may be on they're ride the school. Although I understand that some of the music is not as family friendly, so maybe the majority audience can be considered 15 and up, but most 12 year old these days seem to listen to quite strong languages music anyway. I actually enjoyed this project much more than I expected and would want to do something like this in the future, who knows maybe I’ll try to be a radio DJ myself. Joking, I’m not that good enough. |
