X-FactorThe X-Factor was built as a reality TV show somewhat like Big Brother, but merged with a talent show concept. They use technology such as their website to get the audience involved in the candidates journey throughout the show. Many shows prefers the 'rags-to-riches' story line in where the candidate is able to improve over time and become someone from being famous. So if they came onto the show already quite amazing and high up most people won't vote for them as they don't feel a connection to the candidate. One Direction One Direction is a boy band that consists of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. They had gone on The X Factor in 2010 and finished 3rd overall. The creater of the T.V show Simon Cowell then signed them up top his own record label called Syco Records. As One Direction is a man made group they picked each member to have specific characteristics: Nial Horam was the cute little irish one, Zayn Malik was the quiet and mysterious one, Liam Payne the sensible one, Louis Tomlinson the funny one and Harry Styles the charming one. This allowed the the audience to have a member of the band to relate to no matter their personality. Their stylist Caroline Watson exampled how she didn't want all the members to have to have the same look as stereotypical boy bands, her inspiration cane from the Spice Girls. History (Music Video) The Music Video History is the 3rd and final single from their 5th album and presented the end of their journey as a band. The video featured clips of them when they just started of, it highlighted their tours and personal anecdotes, to my surprise they added in clips with the former member Zayn Malik who left the groups prior to the making of the video. In the end of the video they walk off as a band in separate directions showing that they are moving on and starting the next chapter of their lives. The fact that throughout the video they refer to "living forever" means that although for now they are going their separate ways they are still friends and might in the future once again join up, although sadly it doesn't seem to likely. At one point of the video the lyrics "You and me got a whole lot of history" and it shows images of Zayn Malik and the other members of the band which presents how the other members have forgiven him for leaving. The music blend of both narrative and performance it consists of footage of them performing and black and white footage of the past. The videos of the past were presented in black and white film connote that they are old, boring and should be left in the past. The colour images of the present connotes life, happiness and the present. Furthermore the fact that at the end of the video it is shows the members of the band exiting the stage separately shows that the future, in which they may be separate, is also bright and happy as them ending the band is not a sad occasion. Obviously we don't really know the reason they split it, but I personally think they were all bored of the cute boy band thing and wanted to look into music in their own ways. Stereo-typically though bands ed on quite negative notes, like fifth harmony. Just to recap Camilla Cabello left their group and it didn't end well. On stage at their tour they hung up a dummy, representing Camilla, and then kicked her off. To make sure that the O-Direction break-off didn't seem as such as so they all remained loved in fans eyes the ending was very symbolic. In addition I noticed that although Zayn Malik wasn't present in the actual coloured video part, they added videos of him in the black and white section showing that there is no tension between them and him either. Each singer had their own part in the video in which they sang and kind-off showed their own personal style to promote their later singing career. Just to look into the particular scenes in the video:

Regulation is done by the BBFC have to do with rating the film/ music video wtv in order to protect teh younger audience from explicit content and ideas. The BBFC specify age ratings and certifications. They classify this by considering things such as:
But sometimes this backfires as when teenagers especially are told not to watch something they will want to watch it even more, an example of this is the Frankie Goes to Hollywood "Relax" song, the music video in my opinion wasn't that bad all it was was a performance video with a stripper walking around. Never the less is was banned in 1984 for sexual content, but later became the No1 hit.
At the beginning of the music video the lead singer, Alex Turner, saying "Don't believe the hype" this connotes that people shouldn't believe what others say and encourages people to come and watch the show. They are also trying to express that they are not mainstream and are quite different from others. Apparently at some concerts they would make the audience turn of their phones and "be there" to feel the vibes. There's quite a of close up to the lead singer or his singing and furthermore close ups of the playing of the drums. I like how the camera isn't perfectly stable and the zooming in about out is shaky, sure usually that wouldn't be considered a good thing but in the scenario it added to the rawness and gives a rock vibe. I like the fact that the band only plays in small areas and actually refused to tour large stages, which really shows that to them it's all about the music, furthermore the vibe that the concert would have would be very different and the fact that theres nothing going on on stage except then who are simply doing their thing. Following that the actual music video is filmed in a music studio, due to the fact that it's recorded live the sound quality isn't so good but that reinforces the realness. I found it quite interesting as the video was shot using the Illegami 3-tube colour television camera from the 1980's which explain the filtery Instagram feel of the video. Psychometrics I believe the psychometrics of the audience who listen to the Arctic Monkeys could be along the lines of explorers, succeedors, reformers or strugglers for different reasons. Explorers would accidentally find a band such as the AM due to their need of discovery and challenges. Although they may not stay fans for long as they would get bored and moev on. The succedors are self confident and strongly oriented and would not care about the majority and what they listen to so they would be appealed to this band due to it's niche audience. Reformers are somewhat like the succedors and value their own independent judgement so would not be interested in main stream music. Audience with the psychometric of a struggler seek escape and could use the AM's music for such as it doesn't focus on any serious saddening issues, problems. How does the Uses and Gratifications theory come into this? As all media and music video's it uses the needs from the Uses and Gratification theory to interest the audience.
I these are my final CD covers. For my front I used a very similar image to what I had made for my Promotional poster and had just resized it and played a bit with the tool to get a better contrast. I had decided to keep the front very similar to the promotional poster because to me it would make the most sense and would be easier to identify. If I had more time though I would have like to retake some images based on my new skill set and gave the artist more movement in facial expression and body language, as she look quite stiff. I decided to move the artists name rather from under the title where it was before to the bottom right corner because I think it had more of an effect and popped out under her skin tone. I kept the contrast quite high to make her stand out but as said before was not very happy with the lighting of the photograph. I had also enlarged the album title and stretched it out, I thought it looked better this way as it took up the space more nicely and although less legible than before I thought you could still understand what it said and if need could read the side cover.
For my back I used a photograph I had taken on the shoot but never used in my promotional poster. I'm actually quite happy with how my back turned out. I decided to make the back in the same style as the front but not the same picture. I think it reminds me a lot of Adele's 25 CD cover. One thing I was not very happy though is the test for the songs, I didn't really know how to make it fit without making the text to be but not leaving to much not used area. I'm also not sure about the font I used, I tried to correlate it with test from my promotional poster but not very happy with the result. Now that I think about it I feel I should've used something more simple. I do on the other hand like the font for the numbers that I used, I think it stands out nicely and fits with the over all theme. Oddly I really like the bottom of my poster, my QR code, copyrighting and record label, I think it looks like it does on actual CD's and makes me happy of it simplicity. I am also pretty happy with my sides although they don't actually have much on it, but I somewhat like the simplicity and the space on either sides. The genre and audience stay the same so I won't repeat myself.
This is my final piece. I am quite happy with it. I decided to create a modern promotional poster inspired by pop artists like Adele as well as alternative artists like Florence+The Machine. Both artists whilst different have similarities as they quite simplistic features and work with bold statements. My promotional poster has a futuristic look with the shinning golden lips and glitter across the side of her face. I decided to keep her face clean and simple showing her bare, more vulnerable and real. I also showed only her top half by taking a close up in which looks like shes topless, this also provokes vulnerability. To contrast the vulnerability I made sure she gave the camera direct eye contact to look fierce. I kept the background simple and clean too to have all attention on her. If I were again though I would try lighten it up a bit. I made the title big and the font simplistic but bold. I chose a this font because it gave a millennium look and to me showed power. I gave it a 3-D look to make it pop more. I feel it almost reminds me of game of thrones. I had the artists name, Olive, In the same font but in black and reasonably smaller than the title. The release date how ever I decided to mix up and had in a different font, cursive more fancy, or else the bold, same font would be overwhelming to look at. In the corner I added a QR code and a Itunes label to make it look more professional and realistic. I also purposely decided to crop my poster in this original way to make it more unique.
If I were to redo my promotional poster I would try work with the lighting better so the models left face wouldn't be covered as much in shadow. I would also try make her eyes pop more again by adjusting lighting and also, maybe giving her some mascara. As I already mentioned I would have liked the background to look a bit brighter to hive the image a crisper look, on the other hand I like how it look against the title. I would maybe also give the model a bit of a glow. I would also just lighten the whole poster and give it more contrast. It may not have turned out exactly how I expected but I think it did work well together and maybe I could even imagine seeing this as a actual poster. I think it worked because I didn't have an over the top idea in my head, as I knew what I was capable of and worked with that. The audience this promotional poster is created for are young adults such as myself. Although I feel like it could be suitable for a wide range of ages. First of all I considered young adults because the cover is quite modern and inspired by modern music. Young adults can relate to the artist more, as they too sometimes feel overwhelmed and bare. In addition the model herself is around their age. The genre of this promotional poster is alternative pop. I think this because pop music is very modern, sleek, clean and that is what I tried to show in my poster. They also like to focus on the artist face any many use eye contact to grab attention like I did. I think it also has a bit of an alternative, futuristic vibe to it because of the gold incorporated on her face and the blank expression her face holds. Pop is usually upbeat and quite let me say 'basic' alternative is similiar but usually has its own flare to it. I choose this poster because: 1. It has a very vintage look, which is unexpected from an artist in 2017 2. I like the bright vivid colour used that pop to your eyes 3. The fonts text used is also very old school and reminiscent of the 1970's
Michael Jackson- Thriller was released on November 30, 1932, its release was very important and influenced many generations of future music videos. It quickly became a best selling album and is well known to everybody. It took nearly 3 months to film and ended up being 14 minutes long. This particular music is a blend of narrative and performance. It was different to music videos made because of numerous reasons:
1. It was made and produced by a men of colour. Back then having men of colour present in the music video in general was odd, which thriller also did so it was a rather controversial video. 2. It had a lot of narrative present unlike previous videos. Watch the video again without music, I dare you. It will oddly make sense because it had a very though out story line present and almost resembles a mini horror film. 3. It included people other than the band itself which was common. Thriller is a classic everybody says and I agree. If the quality was a big better I believe it could pass as a modern music video, but there is one thing more modern music videos definitely have different that this one. The length. Modern day music videos length vary, but most hit the average of 3 minutes as producers have realized if it's much longer the audience will loose interest. This video however was nearly 14 and to my feel had a bit too much narrative involved. The audience in the 1930's were most likely shocked by this new style so were intrigued by all of it. When it comes down to production I think its very carefully made. Every little detail thought out. The video starts with a narrative of a couple, Michael Jackson and a girl, in the woods at night you can immediately notice the dark background of the the video, this you will notice goes through out the whole video except the very end where all the horror is over and the background lightens up. In this Video you will notice a lot of choreography with multiple people in it which was also rare to previous videos. The choreography is very slow and robotic to represent the zombies. Now lets look deeper into the scenes. In scene one, the video starts without any music playing and the first shot is an establishing shot put on a dolly as it follows the car as it moves. It then moves into an over the shoulder shot to give us a bit of an idea of the characters in the car and to establish that this is Michael Jackson video as he the main character in this little pre story line. The couple runs out of gas so the decide to walk, the camera shows a shot panning upwards from worm's eye view to show us their faces at neutral. In this first scene they have a lot of close up shots of the characters individually where there is no background sound to build up the story. The story then has a twist when the main character, Jackson, says that he is a werewolf but even before he says it the readers can know its coming due to the music building up whilst he speaks. It starts quite quiet then steadily builds up until it reaches its loudest point, where the character turns into a werewolf. The producer then shows many xcu shots, which a very close up shots, showing the transformation. During the whole scene the video is dark to give is a effect of mystery. The scene ends on a close up of the werewolf roaring into the screen which is very effective. The second scene is quite long. The first part includes a close up shots of the two main characters and then a couple long shots all at eye level. The scenery turns very murky and dark. Jackson's outfit is fully red which may represent love and passion to either music or the lead woman but also evil as he later turns into a zombie. Or it may just be Jackson trying to stand out and show off. During this part they are always to the left of the screen with some road in front of them until they pass the grave yard. Having them in that positioning allows our eye to travel a full circle from right corner, where the eye is naturally drawn too, until the bottom left where they are positioned. This part is mostly a performance and consists a lot of Jackson just singing and dancing will casually flirting with the girl. Multiple times you can notice that Jackson's dancing is specifically choreographed to fit the lyrics in the song. This also happens with the background noises, which includes a couple screams. During this scene you don't see a lot of the background because its quite smudged. It smoothly moves onto the next scene by having a zoom into the graveyard. This next scene I find quite interesting. The singing stops and you can see quite a scary misty looking graveyard in the background. A additional tune is played and a voice starts narrating. The voice seems unusual to a music video as it is not rapping, or talking to a beat but simply narrating as you would see in films or in storytelling. In zooms closer into a graveyard and slowly you can observe a hand reaching out and a zombie climbs out. You can notice that the narration is followed up by the actions of the zombies. All of this brings a rather spooky feeling and although may not scare modern audience would seem likely to give the shivers to the readers in 1932. I feel this bit is the most odd in a music video and feel as if in modern videos would be shortened or cut out in general. You can notice none of the zombies costumes have bright colors and the almost blend into the background at times. Whilst this is happening there are a couple closeups of the zombies but you don't see the two main characters. The two protagonist then are shown walking towards the camera but because its a closeup you cannot see the zombies surrounding them. The next shot is take from a high angle leaning down towards the couple as the zombies surround them. It's followed by multiple closeups of Jackson and a couple zombies but then the music shuts of completely. As background noises of sort of mumbling is added. This shot is taken from behind. You then see a closeup of only the girl and suddenly with an surprise noise track she turns around to find Jackson a zombie. They only added her in the closeup to provide the audience with a shook factor to the main character turned into the 'villain' almost. We then have a zoom into the girl and the music suddenly starts. It pans out in a choreographed dance with Jackson leading. The movements in the dance are very stiff and slow. After a while of choreographed dancing with a large group of people, which was uncommon in previous music videos, which showed a lot of high long shots the singing comes back on. The dancing continues with Jackson now singing. The singing stops again but the music still plays showing the main female character running into a dark house. The tracks turns off once again to involve more of the narrative uncommon in modern music videos. The background still quite dark. The house involves little props but a couch on which the girl scrabbles on to and the camera is whipped into a shot of Jackson and the zombies zooming into Jackson's face. The close in a show a xcu of the girl face and the suddenly the background lightens up showing modern house and Jackson calling her to wake up. This is the last scene. Through out this whole part the music is off and background noise compared to previous scenes is minimal. The background compared to the rest of the video you can notice is lighter more inviting and friendly and color of the background is quite neutral and calming- blue. The very last bit though darkens a bit and Jackson turns to show his were-wolf eyes leading back to the beginning of the music video. And that's it. |
