Some people suggest that the Propp theory is used in magazines. To recap the Propp theory you can visit my theory page, but it basically states that all standard films have roles that fall under standard categories etc.
But how does this fit into magazine? Some say that apirational magazines such as Tatler, Vogue etc. present those who are wealthy, confident and beautiful. The cover of such a magazine would put the reader into the role of the hero to undertake the quest of reading the magazine. If this is so then the prize of such would the self-gratification from reading the magazine. When reading the magazine the theory states that you would be able to build a fantasy relationship and become one of them. The cover lines that tease content acts as a dispatcher for the reader to actually read the magazine. Cover line with juicy in-tell of the lives of the wealthy, promising to help you join them act as the donor, which will help the reader overcome the villain and win the prize. The father in this situation may be the cost as it provides for some people an issue which is hard to overcome. The theory seems a bit far stretched to me, but does have a certain logic and understanding to it when you think more deeply into it. I think it would be rather difficult to apply this theory well in all magazines, but I guess the basic idea of the reader being the hero and the reading of the magazine being the prize could work in any situation.
