Character In my vlog i decided to play a character similar to Zoella's. By this I mean I portrayed a very happy, jumpy almost annoying to some character. I did so to target my Target Market which would be young female teens from age 13 up. To hit my target market I kept the language clean, and used simple language that they would understand. I think that's who would watch vlogs as such that I designed because they are happy, jumpy, overacting and beauty related, although, mine was not as much. I kept the background clean such as a bed which is commonly used with such "beauty vloggers". The lighting in the room was also kept simple and bright. The clothing picked were simply, daily wear but I made sure the colours were clean, straight and would clash. By wearing relatable, at least in Oman, clothing to many other girls in the similar age group (12-16) would wear, this would let them connect to me more, almost as if we were friends. Storyline/ Narrative I had a very basic storyline to my vlog. It had a beginning/start, in which I introduced myself and the video and middle action, in which the content of my vlog appeared. Lastly I also had an ending in which I ended the video said good bye and etc. I noticed that many vloggers have this sort of narrative without much of a high clix point in the middle of the video, which I feel allows the audience to get bored more easily. Maybe in the future If I have to make another vlog I would try incorporate a climax which would then follow more of a complex Todorov storyline, rather than the simplified version. Editing I found the editing part of my vlog very hard because I realise i'm not to good with computers. I am however proud of what I was able to do although it may have been very simplistic. I was able to add in images during periods of the video and was able to add in music, which with compared to what I was able to do before it a lot. Although I realise the video I produced was kind off cringe and editing can be improved i'm exited to try work with it. Reflection One thing I can say is that I am definitely not going a Youtuber as a profession no matter the benefits. Personally I did not enjoy the experience, but i do acknowledge that new experiences such as this one are important to grow. I found it difficult, not to laugh or loose the seriousness during the video because I felt as if it was a joke. I think we don't take credit for how much work Youtubers and Vloggers put into videos no matter how much they say it. The editing involved is crazy, or at least for me as I am not a fanatic of computer work and find that quite difficult. This is including the fact that my video was quite simplistic. In addition I think if i would redue it I would get a better more organized setting, as instead of balancing the camera of a pile of books, table and a upside trash can and I would get a tri-pod, this would help the balancing and make the filming easier. I would also try set up some lights to creates a warmer feel to the video, but I can try add that whilst editing. It would also light up our faces keeping concentration on us and making us stand out from the background. As I was portraying myself as a beauty Vlogger, maybe I should have added more of a beauty aspect to it, but I found this hard because in real life i'm not really much of a beauty, makeup, fashion girl. In the future I may also, get more of a scripted text an try shooting from multiple angles in the video, to show my skills although I realize that many Youtubers just keep it clean and simple with one shot. I think this makes it feel more chill and allows the audience to feel more of a close relationship to you. I found the very simplistic editing quite hard, I also frankly found it rather boring. I am although quite happy with my minimal achievements and hope to improve those later on. Sadly I didn't realise that the software I was using had a watermark, copyright included on it unless I got the full version therefore I have a massive watermark across my whole video. In the future I will make sure this doesn't happen again, but I guess it is what it is.

Audience Reception Theory -Preferred (dominant) -Neutral -Oppositional This is important due to modern day Q & A and live streaming where you can immediately react. How Does She Get Money?
Industry Collaborations-Industry Collaborations give her views. It's noticable that when celebrities come up on her channel, she gets more subs.
When Miranda Sings came onto her channel she got a high peak of subs and views. She got 22 million views from this one video only. Actually she got more subs than views, which means people that didn't even watch the video followed her because they knew Miranda Sings was on her channel. The more subs she got also had to do with the more she got excepted in the wider media. You can notice that she is specifically targeting her teenage audience. This is obvious by the title "The Teenage Years/ Friendships, Bodies, Hormones & Periods" these topics are quite popular through the teenage years as your body is changing, which is why the young female audience may be interested in topics such as hormones and periods, too allow them to better understand what is going on. Also in these years friendships and social groups become a very important part of your life, so this would also interest them.
Her Representation- Zoella chooses a specific way to represent herself. She specifically chooses to be very energetic and happy all the time to connect with the audience and make them happy. Her bubbly personality, makes her very relatable to the audience. She usually picks very very light subtle, clean colours. It's keeps attention to her and doesn't overpower the audience. The tone is quite neutral, very bright.
The mise-en-scene of her room also fits her theme. As it's also quite simple, clean and tends to be more shades of lighter colours. Pastels, or if the colour is bright it tends to be a complementary colour. Zoella tends too use and advertise products in the middle price range. I think this links to her target audience which is middle class teenagers, who wouldn't be able to buy super expensive cosmetics but would spurge a bit for nice designs and covers. Zoella's beauty products are also quite affordable and bubbly, so both appeal to her audience and be affordable to their needs. She's what you expect a stereotypical girl next door situation to be like. She is always very happy, which leads people to believe she is "fake". I could understand where this statement might come from after watching her videos, but if you think about it. Do you watch you-tubers that are sad, take hours too talk and have no enthusiasm or beat to their videos. I don't think so, and if you do you don't fit to the stereotypical audience that she is catering too. |
