Analyse the Galaxy advert to show how narrative devices used might encourage an audience to buy chocolate. [8 marks] The Todorov theory refers to a narrative plot which includes an equilibrium, the girl riding in the bus, a disruption of equilibrium, the fruit stall falling and the bus stopping, and the restoring of the equilibrium which is when the handsome man arrives and takes the girl away. It is coincidence that the chocolate is opened right before the attractive man arrives and connotes that the chocolate will fix all you problems. Furthermore in reference to the Propp theory the chocolate in the advert is deemed as the princess/prize whilst the girl is the hero and after going through all the trouble the girl is rewarded by the chocolate. This would make the audience also desire the chocolate. At the end of the advert the girl elegantly bites the chocolate and smiles presenting herself as happy and fulfilled, following the syringe theory which states that the audience is passive and takes in all surrounding would mean that the audience see the girl happy and would believe that buying the chocolate would also make them happy.
